Erie's Hot Rod History

You might remember me as the guy who was collecting signatures on petitions at Cruise the Bay and Buggin' State car shows a few years back. My hope was that in doing so it would extend the number of Buggin' State events thus preserving, what I felt was, a connection to Erie's hot rodding past. If you are a regular at these events, chances are that I "bugged you" until I got your signature.

While collecting these signatures, I talked with lots of people and heard many different and interesting hot rodding stories. Some of these stories were from the post-war years, others from the mid-'50's, some from the muscle car era, and some were even more recent. As a regular reader of publications like The Rodders Journal, Hot Rod Deluxe, and others, I got to thinking... Why not try to document the local hot rodding history I was hearing so much about? After all, these publications speak as much to history and culture as they do the technical aspects of the times.

This got me to thinking: what would be the best way to gather this information? After considering many different options, I decided to use a blogging format. People who wish could upload their stories, pictures and videos.

For example: While collecting those signatures at a Buggin' State event, I got talking to a guy who, along with his friend and their wives, recounted stories of hot rodding in Millcreek in their flathead powered Mercs. The one guy told of buggin' state with his wife while she was pregnant! I also heard stories of pulling the "innards" out of their mufflers and then being pulled over by the local authorities because they were "...a little loud." What happened next was really funny but I hope to see this story posted from the story-teller himself.

I've never blogged before so this is all new to me. My goal is to collect interesting stories, verify/document them as best as I can and put them into a book of some sort to create and preserve this part of Erie's automotive history.

Let me know your thoughts by sharing your pictures and stories about hot rodding in Erie. If blogging isn't your thing, you can email me, too! Just send me a message at knauer001@gmail.com

Thanks much!
